Dealing with Teenage Acne: Helping Teens Cope with the Most Common Adolescent Skin Problem

Adolescence is the period when most people are likely to have acne. The onset of puberty makes hormones highly active, which can result in the skin creating more oil. The excess oil can clog the pores and create a place for bacteria to thrive. The good thing about acne is that for most people, they disappear naturally once the person gets through his or her teenage years.

But what about while you are a teenager? We all know that most teenagers are very conscious of their looks and having pimples does not exactly help a person's self-esteem. To help you teenagers get through this trying time, here are some basic tips.

1. Keep your face clean. Wash your face at least twice a day, particularly if your skin is the oily type. If you have long hair, keep that clean too. The dirt in your hair can easily transfer to your face and could irritate the skin in your face and neck.

2. Drink plenty of water and eat lots of vegetables and fruits. No matter what you hear about pimples not having anything to do with food, you cannot deny that an overall healthy body will always give you a better chance of keeping your skin healthy too.

3. Avoid picking your zits. It is tempting, I know, but keep your hands off your face or you will only make your pimples worse. Our hands gather a lot of dirt throughout the day and putting them in our faces will definitely not help our cause. Don't touch your pimples, don't squeeze them and don't rub them!

4. Don't expose yourself to too much sun. Anything that is too much is bad, remember that. If you're trying to get a tan, use sunscreen and don't forget to moisturize your face at night. The rays can dry your skin, make it brittle and make it more prone to breakouts.

5. Know your cosmetics. If you can do without makeup, the better. The more gook we put in our face, the more likely that our skin will get irritated. It is also important to know what type your skin is so that you will know whether you need to use a facial wash for oily skin, for normal skin, for combination, dry or for sensitive skin.

Teenage acne is quite easy enough to manage if you follow these tips. If the condition is worse than traditional zits, a visit to a dermatologist or a physician is in order.
